On you first visit with us you can expect the following:
Dental Exam
A professional dental exam is recommended at least once every six months. Our dental exams are focused on prevention. We look to prevent dental problems from getting worse and also preventing future dental problems from occurring. By actively and regularly examining patients teeth we can work to avoid and prevent costly dental treatment.
During your dental exam we will perform a comprehensive head and neck exam where we will evaluate lymph nodes, salivary glands, thyroid gland and temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). We will then examine you lips, cheeks, palate and tongue. This is a very important tool is detecting oral cancer. Most of our patients report this examination feels like a mini massage!
Your gums will be evaluated and screened for any signs of gum disease. Last, but certainly not least, your teeth will be examined for signs of plaque, tarter and decay.
Radiographs
Based on your particular dental need the doctor will prescribe any necessary radiographs (x-rays). Dental x-rays have come a long way in recent years. Our office uses all digital dental x-rays. This technology provides an over 60% reduction in the amount of radiation needed to capture an image. These high quality, high resolution images can be viewed immediately by patient and doctor together on LCD monitors in every treatment room.
We also use intraoral cameras to aid in diagnosis and patient education. We are able to take photographic images to evaluate dental problems such as cavities, fractures and discolorations of teeth. This technology allows us to provide excellent dental evaluation and diagnosis so treatment can be delivered when dental problems are in their earliest stages.
Teeth Cleaning
Even if you take meticulous care of your teeth by brushing a flossing regularly, plaque and tarter can still build-up. A professional dental cleaning is the single most effective way to prevent these harmful deposits from accumulating and causing future dental problems. The dentist or hygienist will use specialized instruments to remove these deposits without harming the teeth. Our office uses ultrasonic instruments as well as hand tools. The ultrasonic cleaner uses vibration and water spray to remove stain and plaque accumulation from around the teeth. We also use hand tools to clean and smooth tooth surfaces. Dental polishing or prophylaxis will them be used to polish and shine the teeth giving you that “fresh from the dentist” feel. Finally, because our office focuses on prevention, you will be offered fluoride regardless of age. Fluoride promotes remineralization of the teeth and increases your resistance to decay.
Children’s First Dental Visit
At Mount Olive Family Dental we make dentistry fun. We treat children — and they are some of our favorite people! Here children will be invited to learn about dentistry in our safe and non-threatening environment. Education is our main goal with children from what our instruments are and how they are used to how they should care for their teeth at home.
At your child’s first visit we will provide a professional dental cleaning, take any necessary digital x-rays, provide necessary oral hygiene instruction, offer fluoride and provide a comprehensive evaluation. The examination will look for:
- cavities
- loose teeth
- gum health
- bite and habits such as thumb sucking
- homecare
- medical and dietary concerns
